Seine wissenschaftliche Laufbahn begann Prof. Dr. Ulrich A. Handge an der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg im Breisgau. Nach dem Diplom (1997) und der Promotion (2000) an der Fakultät für Physik in Freiburg war Ulrich Handge von 2001 bis 2008 am Departement Materialwissenschaft der ETH Zürich tätig. Dort widmete er sich u.a. der experimentellen Untersuchung der rheologischen Eigenschaften von Polymerschmelzen. Schwerpunkt seiner Tätigkeit an der Fakultät für Ingenieurwissenschaften der Universität Bayreuth (2008 bis 2011, Habilitation 2012) waren die Entwicklung neuer Polymerwerkstoffe und die Verarbeitung von Kunststoffen. Nach zehnjähriger Forschungstätigkeit am Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon in Geesthacht sowie Lehrtätigkeit im Fachbereich Chemie an der Universität Hamburg nahm Ulrich Handge im Oktober 2021 den Ruf auf die Professur "Kunststofftechnologie" an der Fakultät Maschinenbau der TU Dortmund an.

Zentrale Themen seiner Forschung sind die Kunststoffverarbeitung und Entwicklung neuer Kunststoffe. In seinen Modellierungsaktivitäten und experimentellen Untersuchungen vereinigt er natur- und ingenieurwissenschaftliche Methoden und Verfahren. Ziel seiner Forschung ist, ein möglichst umfassendes Verständnis des Einflusses der molekularen Architektur und des Verarbeitungsprozesses auf die Bauteileigenschaften von Polymerwerkstoffen zu gewinnen.
